RESUMO

In this study, the phospholipid species [i.e., phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and sphingomyelin (SM)] in human milk (HM) were compared according to their fatty acid (FA) composition. 34 HM samples were collected and classified into three groups (A < B < C) according to their fat content. Stearic acid (C18:0) was the main FA in PE, PC, and SM. The highest concentrations of arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) were observed in PE, whereas docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was predominant in SM. Although PC exhibited the highest total saturated FAs (SFAs) and PE contained the highest unsaturated FAs (UFAs), very long-chain SFAs and monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs) were preferentially distributed in SM. PC and SM had higher saturation compared to PE. Regarding the effect of the fat content of HM on the FA composition of the phospholipid species, a limited influence was observed on the composition of SFAs and MUFAs of PE, SM, and particularly PC. However, a more pronounced effect on the composition of polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) in phospholipids was observed, especially for linoleic acid (LA), α-linolenic acid (ALA), EPA, and DHA, indicating that the composition of FAs in the phospholipid species was probably affected by the maternal diet.

RESUMO

This study aims to quantitatively analyze nervonic (C24:1 n-9) and erucic (C22:1 n-9) acids in human milk (HM) collected from Korean mothers, along with the infant formulas (IFs) with different fat sources and nutritional stages. The content of nervonic and erucic acids in HM from Korean mothers were 2.13 and 2.81 mg/100 g, accounting for 0.06 and 0.08% of the total fatty acids (FAs), respectively. These acids in IFs based on fat from plant-oil formula were higher than those in IFs based on cow milk formula. The composition of erucic acid in IFs based on cow milk formula and plant-oil formula increased with the nutritional stages, while nervonic acid only increased in IFs based on the plant-oil formula.

RESUMO

AIMS: To evaluate the effect of low glycemic index or low glycemic load diets on maternal and neonatal outcomes at high risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). DATA SYNTHESIS: Several databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, OVID, Clinical Trials. gov, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Database, and Wanfang Database) were searched from January 1990 to January 2022 (updated to November 2022). Randomized controlled trials of low glycemic index diets interventions for women at high risk of GDM were included. From 2131 articles initially were screened, after eliminating duplicates, 1749 titles and abstracts were analyzed. 71 documents that met the inclusion criteria were selected and 3 documents were obtained through searching the reference lists. After reading the full text, 10 studies were retained. Two authors evaluated the studies, extracted data and conducted quality assessment independently. A total of 10 studies with 2304 patients met the inclusion criteria. Compared with the control group, a low glycemic index diet could control the range of weight gain (WMD -1.01, 95% CI -1.41 to -0.61), decrease the incidence of excessive weight gain (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.54-0.87), lessen the incidence of large-for-gestational-age infants (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.16-0.62) and reduce the incidence of preterm infants (OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.29-0.71). CONCLUSION: A low glycemic index or low glycemic load diet could control maternal weight gain, reduce the incidence of excessive weight gain, and decrease the incidence of large-for-gestational-age infants and preterm infants in group with high risk of GDM. RESUMO

The porcine-derived non-cross-linked collagen membrane Bio-gide® (BG) and the bovine-derived non-cross-linked collagen membrane Heal-all® (HA) were compared to better understand their in vitro biophysical characteristics and in vivo degradation patterns as a reference for clinical applications. It was showed that the porosity, specific surface area, pore volume and pore diameter of BG were larger than those of HA (64.5 ± 5.2% vs. 48.6 ± 6.1%; 18.6 ± 2.8 m2 /g vs. 2.3 ± 0.6 m2 /g; 0.114 ± 0.002 cm3 /g vs. 0.003 ± 0.001 cm3 /g; 24.4 ± 3.5 nm vs. 7.3 ± 1.7 nm, respectively); the average swelling ratio of BG was higher than that of HA (412.6 ± 41.2% vs. 270.0 ± 2.7%); the tensile strength of both dry and wet HA was higher than those of BG (18.26 ± 3.27 MPa vs. 4.02 ± 1.35 MPa; 2.24 ± 0.21 MPa vs. 0.16 ± 0.02 MPa, respectively); 73% of HA remained after 72 h in collagenase solution, whereas only 8.2% of BG remained. A subcutaneous rat implantation model revealed that, at 3, 7, 14, 28, and 56 days postmembrane implantation, there were more total inflammatory cells, especially more M1 and M2 polarized macrophages and higher M2/M1 ratio in BG than in HA; in addition, the fibrous capsule around BG was also thicker than that around HA. Moreover, concentrations of dozens of cytokines including interleukin-2(IL-2), IL-7, IL-10 and so forth. in BG were higher than those in HA. It is suggested that BG and HA might be suitable for different clinical applications according to their different characteristics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early prevention of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can reduce the incidence of not only GDM, but also adverse perinatal pregnancy outcomes. Moreover, it is of great significance to prevent or reduce the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. Mobile health (mHealth) apps can help pregnant women effectively prevent GDM by providing risk prediction, lifestyle support, peer support, professional support, and other functions. Before designing mHealth apps, developers must understand the views and needs of pregnant women, and closely combine users' needs to develop app functions, in order to better improve user experience and increase the usage rate of these apps in the future. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to understand the views of the high-risk population of gestational diabetes mellitus on the development of mobile health apps and the demand for app functions, so as to provide a basis for the development of gestational diabetes mellitus prevention apps. METHODS: Fifteen pregnant women with at least one risk factor for gestational diabetes were recruited from July to September 2021, and were interviewed via a semistructured interview using the purpose sampling method. The transcribed data were analyzed by the traditional content analysis method, and themes were extracted. RESULTS: Respondents wanted to develop user-friendly and fully functional mobile apps for the prevention of gestational diabetes mellitus. Pregnant women's requirements for app function development include: personalized customization, accurate information support, interactive design, practical tool support, visual presentation, convenient professional support, peer support, reasonable reminder function, appropriate maternal and infant auxiliary function, and differentiated incentive function. These function settings can encourage pregnant women to improve or maintain healthy living habits during their use of the app. CONCLUSIONS: This study discusses the functional requirements of target users for gestational diabetes mellitus prevention apps, which can provide reference for the development of future applications.

RESUMO

When cassava is used for the production of distilled spirits through fermentation and distillation, toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is released from linamarin and carcinogenic ethyl carbamate is produced. Herein, cyanide and ethyl carbamate contents were monitored during the fermentation and lab-scale continuous distillation processes. Thereafter, mass balance and the influence of copper chips were evaluated. Results showed that 81.5% of cyanide was removed after fermentation. Use of copper chips completely prevented the migration of cyanide into the distilled spirits, while 88.3% of cyanide migrated from the fermented liquid in the absence of copper chips. Formation of ethyl carbamate was significantly promoted during distillation. Most of the produced ethyl carbamate (73.2%) was transferred into the distilled spirits in the absence of copper chips, only 9.6% of the ethyl carbamate was transferred when copper chips were used. Thus, copper chips effectively prevented the migration of cyanide and ethyl carbamate into the distilled spirts during continuous distillation.

RESUMO

Fat globule size and phospholipid (PL) content in human milk (HM) were investigated. HM was classified into three groups depending on fat content (A < B < C). PL content (mg/100 g HM) was significantly higher in the C group (p < 0.05), indicating its positive relationship with HM fat content. When the PL content was normalized (mg/g fat), that of group A was significantly higher (p < 0.05) and fat droplet size in group C was slightly larger, suggesting that HM fat content is affected by fat droplet numbers to a larger extent than by fat droplet size. A correlation between PC and SM content in HM was observed regardless of fat content, while correlation between PE and either PC or SM increased in the order of C > B > A, hence the composition and content of PL species in HM varied according to its fat content.

RESUMO

In this study, the antioxidative capacity of caffeic acid (CA), ascorbyl palmitate (AP), α-tocopherol (α-TO), and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) was evaluated under the thermal oxidation model, in which 200 ppm of each compound was added to soybean oil, followed by thermal oxidation at 180°C for 32 h. Change of viscosity, acid value (AV), conjugated dienoic acid value (CDAV), p-anisidine value (p-AV), total polar materials (TPM), and the ratio of C18:2 to C16:0 (LA/PA) were evaluated during the reaction. All antioxidants showed significantly lower viscosity, TPM, and p-AV, and higher LA/PA, than the control (without antioxidant, CON), indicating that thermal oxidation was delayed. Among them, CAPE showed significantly lower viscosity, TPM, and p-AV, and higher LA/PA, than the other antioxidants (p < 0.05). In the correlation between the oxidation parameters measured from CON and CAPE, the correlation coefficient between p-AV and viscosity was rather low at r = 0.7603 (in CON) and r = 0.7338 (in CAPE), respectively.

RESUMO

Thirty-four samples of human milk (HM) collected from mothers in Korea were classified into three groups according to their fat content. The lutein + zeaxanthin, ß-cryptoxanthin, ß-carotene, lycopene, α-carotene, and fatty acids (FAs) present in the HM were quantitatively analyzed. Lutein + zeaxanthin and ß-cryptoxanthin were the most abundant carotenoid components in this study, followed by ß-carotene. When the classified groups were compared in terms of the content of each carotenoid, there was no statistical difference (p > 0.05), indicating that there is no correlation between the content of fat and carotenoid in HM. The mean content of saturated FAs (SFAs), monounsaturated FAs, and polyunsaturated FAs in the analyzed HM were 1.46, 1.36, and 0.83 g/100 g, respectively. In addition, the mean content of arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were 0.02 and 0.029 g/100 g, respectively. Alternatively, all FAs except for certain SFAs (i.e., C8:0, C10:0, C12:0, and C14:0) did not show statistical difference in composition among the three groups (p > 0.05), indicating that the differences in the fat content of HM have limited influence on the FA composition of HM.

RESUMO

NO can be removed at the same time with SO2 by aqueous Co(NH3)62+ solution. The reduction of Co(NH3)63+ to Co(NH3)62+ is catalyzed by activated carbon to regain the NO absorption ability of the scrubbing solution. Oxalic acid solution is explored to change the carbon surface to ameliorate its catalytic capability. The experimental results suggest that the best catalyst is prepared by impregnating the carbon sample in 0.7 mol l-1 oxalic acid solution for 24 h followed by being activated at 600 °C for 5 h under nitrogen atmosphere. After being treated with oxalic acid solution, the surface area and the acidity on the carbon surface increase. The experiments show that the carbon modified with oxalic acid can get a much higher NO removal efficiency than the original carbon.
